Towards open-ended evolution in artificial systems

要旨

Open-ended evolution, a subdiscipline of artificial life, concentrates on achieving perpetual evolution within artificial systems. Scholars in this domain utilize computational techniques to emulate and comprehend life-like systems, aiming to create life and enhance our understanding of life through a constructive approach. In open-ended evolution studies, typical subjects are virtual organisms, and various computational algorithms, such as novelty search and quality diversity algorithms, have been devised to support this research. I will elucidate the fundamental concepts and discoveries within the open-ended evolution field in this presentation.

The technology derived from open-ended evolution research boasts a wide array of applications, from artificial computer systems, like the development of game characters and environments, to biological systems, encompassing the creation of biological robots, such as Xenobot. Additional potential applications encompass the ongoing exploration of new drugs or materials.
